If so, you’re not alone. Many of us were raised with the belief that strength means staying silent, suppressing emotions, and carrying on no matter how heavy life feels. We learned to keep moving forward, to be grateful for the basics.. food on the table, a roof over our heads and to treat emotional needs as luxuries we couldn’t afford to dwell on.
But here's the truth: emotions don’t disappear just because we ignore them. They don’t vanish when we suppress them or pretend they aren’t there. Instead, they settle deep within us, building layers of unspoken pain, confusion, and disconnection. Over time, this internal buildup can leave us feeling stuck, overwhelmed, anxious or even lost without knowing why.
The disconnection from our emotional world isn’t a personal failing. It’s often the result of survival-based conditioning, passed down through generations. But just as it was learned, emotional awareness can be relearned. It starts with intention, with slowing down, and with giving yourself permission to feel.
So how do you begin?
Pause. Take a few quiet moments each day to check in with yourself. No distractions. Just you and your inner world.
Tune in. Ask yourself, What am I feeling right now? Don’t rush for answers. Let your body speak. Notice any tension, tightness, or sensations.
Name your feelings. Even if they’re messy or contradictory. Sad, confused, hopeful, angry, numb, whatever is there is valid.
Feel them. Not to fix or judge, but to acknowledge. Offer yourself kindness as you would a close friend. Let yourself be witnessed; by you.
Write it down. Open a journal and explore what’s coming up. There’s power in putting your feelings into words. It helps you process, understand, and release.
This practice of emotional awareness is not weakness - it's strength.
It’s how you come home to yourself. The more you welcome your feelings, the more clearly you’ll begin to see your needs, your patterns, and your path forward.
You don’t need to have all the answers. You just need to begin by listening.
Your feelings are not obstacles - they are your guides.
